The pursuit of inspiration in London

The teaching corps went to London to get inspiration from English universities in regards to implementing elements of practice-based teaching.

The teaching corps, which is managed by Copenhagen School of Entrepreneurship, went to London to do research on how English universities manage their implementation of practice-based elements. The focus of the trip was to examine courses as chemistry, organisation, strategy, animal genetics, photonics and other courses which are not directly related to students starting up businesses or creating jobs for themselves.

The four-day-trip involved visiting London Business School, known for its heavy case-study tradition and the strong cooperation between businesses within the courses mentioned as well as Kingston Entrepreneurship Center which attaches great importance to applying games as a learning platform.

Program Co-ordinator, Karina Rothoff says that “both universities proved to be inspiring. However, we have acknowledged that we have not been able to find the recipe on how to implement entrepreneurship in the established courses at CBS, KU and DTU. Besides that, we were confirmed that this teaching program where implementation of practice elements is the centre of attention is quite new to the leading universities in England. They as well as we face the same challenges.  Our daily meetings provided the possibility of reflecting and sparring upon our shared experiences, why we were able to go into details with the shared challenges concerning the implementation.

Innovation and intrapreneurship are also part of the core issues of the teaching corps due to the fact that we take pride in embracing other students than the ones who want to start up their own businesses.

In order to get qualified insight into how large companies maintain their innovative ways of thinking for both the market as well as their employees, the teaching corps spent half a day at Google, which introduced their internal innovation focus, their way of working as well as the “Google spirit”.

The next team of teachers who will become a part of the corps will be launched after the summer break, and if you are a university teacher and want to extend one’s competencies within the area of entrepreneurship teaching, contact program coordinator, Karina Rothoff at kr.lpf@cbs.dk.

Targeted coaching of the teaching corps

The teaching corps programme has recently been extended with coaching of the 6 teachers. Coaching of the teaching corps contributes to ensuring new ways of implementing entrepreneurship in university tuition. The teachers, who all come from CBS, DTU and KU, have spent the previous month trying to find their areas of focus, which must be rooted in each their academic disciplines and regular tuition.
In order to target the coaching in the best manner possible, each teacher has chosen 2 to 3 areas within their disciplines, where coaching can be seen as useful in order to apply innovative and new methods as practical elements in their tuition.

According to Project Coordinator, Karina Rothoff, “what is specifically challenging is to support the array of teachers with different backgrounds. Each of their wishes varies and will be of a very specific character, when focus is on creating group dynamics in making new courses, where the goal is to combine the teacher’s normal courses with new elements of entrepreneurship”.

Some of the goals that the teaching corps is working on are:

-         Courses to Ph.D. students: Sustainable chemistry and technology

-         Catalysis and sustainable chemistry

-         Innovative summer school in August 2011, Fotonics

-         Introductory classes in optics

-         Dealing with commercialization of high technological product  patents and development of a model that will bring the patents into play

-         Development of course: “Advanced biotechnology and Intellectual Property Rights which focuses on the process from idea to product

-         New cases within social entrepreneurship

The coaching element in the teaching corps is now well-established and has been kicked off, and what is next is a networking event for the teaching corps on 20th of January 2011, where the teachers will learn how to find relevant networks and reach the optimal use of diversity in networking contexts.

This event will be facilitated by Ph D, Susanne Justesen, who has been involved with innovation, diversity and networks for several years.

Teachers and blogs?

The entrepreneurial teaching program is moving forward

In Next Generation's entrepreneurial teaching program, the 6 chosen teachers from CBS, KU and DTU have now begun their participation in the program, with targeted coaching and as a part of this; the use of blogs.

The coaching takes place as individually as possible, and during the last week, the teachers have engaged in sessions with the team behind the program."Recently we've been looking at the needs and expectations of the individual teacher down to the details of the specific courses. This way the coaching will be 100 % targeted the specific course and hereby the tools for the specific purpose are targeted as well, which of course is the essence of the program", says Karina Rothoff, Project Coordinator.

The team behind the program has implemented the blog, which the teachers must use as the primary source of knowledge in this program. The teachers have therefore been instructed in how to use a blog efficiently, and now the teachers must blog about their own ideas, experiences and actions, partly on their own blog and partly on others teachers' blogs. Michael Thing, who is coach at the entrepreneurial teaching program, will on an ongoing basis blog with the teachers and will also make sure progress takes place regarding ideas in the individual courses.

According to Karina Rothoff, the use of blogs has various functions. "The blogs ensure that the reflections taking place throughout the whole program will be in writing and thereby able to serve as inspiration for the other teacher. Furthermore, there will be one single place to find the activities and details regarding the coaching which gives us an amazing opportunity to look back at the finalized program and conclude which part of the programs has been rewarding for the teacher."

The new generation of entrepreneurial teachers has been chosen

Presenting the team

After months of planning and talks with teachers and associate deans at DTU, CBS and KU, the selection of the first team of teachers to participate in the Entrepreneurial Teaching Program under Next Generation is finally a reality.

The team is composed of very competent teachers from DTU, CBS and KU and will therefore not only provide the setting for entrepreneurship in their own course but equally the setting for entrepreneurship across universities and areas of specialization.

Despite many brilliant applications the steering committee composed of Mette Mønsted (CBS), Søren Hovgaard (KU), John Heebøl (DTU) and Christian Vintergaard (Fonden for Entreprenørskab) all agreed on the following candidates for the Teaching Program:

  • Claus Bøttcher Jørgensen (KU - LIFE - Advanced biotechnology and intellectual rights)

  • Carsten Nico Hjortsø (KU - LIFE - Innovation Strategy and leadership

  • Anders Riisager (DTU - KEMI - Catalysis and sustainable chemestry

  • Christian Pedersen (DTU - FOTONIK - Optics and photonics)

  • Ester Barinaga (CBS - LPF - Social change

  • Anne Reff Pedersen (CBS - IOA - Innovation in the public sector)

The candidates have been chosen based on their teaching, their academic interests and their motivation to think about their courses in an entrepreneurial setting to hereby add value to their courses.

The program will ensure that the teachers get the knowledge, methods and tool they need to implement the new ideas into their teaching and hereby making the students employable
"The chosen candidates will be the pillars of a strong entrepreneurial network and knowledge progress", says Karina Rothoff, Project Coordinator.

Running till May 2011, the program takes the team through conferences, coaching, academic residential courses, study trip abroad and other activities all aimed at providing the most qualified ballast to further develop and communicate entrepreneurship at the three universities in the Capital Region of Denmark.

A description of the teachers will soon be available on our website.

Kick-off seminar

Next Generation's entrepreneurial teaching corps and the Foundation for Entrepreneurship invite you to our kick-off seminar for anyone interested in entrepreneurship.

Launching the teaching program, we have chosen to focus on Social Entrepreneurship, and this is a deliberate choice.
When growth and economic wealth are hidden factors, and the social challenges we face grow in numbers, what we need is for university teaching to add value to the courses in order for innovation and new business models to be created. Furthermore, Social Entrepreneurship entails many of the essential requirements for normal entrepreneurship, and this signifies great possibilities for the rest of the teaching program.

The seminar will be held the 28th of October 2010 from 8.30 to 13.30 at CBS and will be open for anyone interested.

The chosen professors, which will be a part of the teaching corps 2010-2011, will participate in Social Entrepreneurship workshops related to their courses until 17. The selection of teachers for the corps will take place the 26th of October 2010.
